EDITORIAL: Nurturing spirituality

The different religious traditions on this island have historically been hostile towards, or suspicious and dismissive of, the spirituality of “the other”. What nourishes and informs people’s spirituality? How does living faith find expression in different contexts of engagement?

HOW DO YOU rate Lion&Lamb? We’d be grateful if you’d take a few minutes to complete the short survey. In this issue we continue the theme of our autumn conference, exploring aspects of “Christian Spirituality”.

Lynda Gould, who has been Acting Director during David Porter’s sabbatical, in common with many of the contributors, reflects on the tensions she experiences between “doing” and “being”. Stephen Cave celebrates the virtues of racehorses and turtles and David Campton seeks holistic wellbeing.

Spirituality is a continuing journey of living and learning, as Ian Dickson from Belfast Bible College explains. Katharine Poulton describes the spiritual and social enrichment brought about through consciously making the church a place of welcome to others. Gillian Best writes about the draw of the world-wide 24-7 Prayer movement, while Fr Mark-Ephrem Nolan of the Benedictine monastery in Rostrevor suggests why people are attracted to their community way of life.

At our autumn conference, Derek Poole interviewed Rev Paul Symonds and Rev John Dickinson, about the spirituality of their respective Roman Catholic and Reformed traditions. You can read an edited version of that interview here. Finally, Bishop Donal McKeown and Rev Ruth Patterson offer biblical resources on our theme, while our reviewers suggest some refreshing reading for 2007.
